Communities: Mearns LEaRN

UCC activity in the Mearns area has been closely linked with the Local Education and Recreation Network (LEaRN). The UCC has been fortunate in that the LEaRN has 'adopted' the project as one of the main focuses for its own activities for the past two years.

Joint UCC and LEaRN priorities have included the development of Mearns Academy's 'Alternatives to Exclusion' programme for S3 pupils at risk of exclusion from school. In addition, close links between further and higher education institutions and Luthermuir Primary School have been established.

Adult learning has also featured strongly, with the provision of an adult learning fair held at Mearns Community Centre. As a follow-up from this, a 'Keeping up with the Kids' course has been running in Luthermuir Primary School, delivered and managed jointly by Adult Basic Education and the Workers’ Educational Association (WEA).
